In WordPress, a user is an individual who has an account on your website and has access to the WordPress dashboard, where they can manage their profile, posts, and other content. When a user creates a post they are considered by WordPress to be the post’s “author.”
However, the creator of a post is not necessarily the author of the post’s content, i.e. the article’s text, so the Lede platform has introduced bylines. The author byline will display their name and image (if available) and will link to their author bio page on the site.
Available bylines come from Profiles in the WordPress dashboard. A profile is a collection of information about an individual, such as their name, email address, bio, and website.
The main difference between users and profiles is that users have access to the WordPress dashboard, while profiles do not necessarily. (Although it’s common for users to have profiles, which they can edit themselves). Only users can create and edit posts, pages, and other content, while a post’s authorship can be attributed to any profile via bylines.
Creating & Updating Profiles
- Navigate in your WordPress Admin > All Profiles to see every existing profile.
- Click Add New Profile to create a new profile. Click on an existing profile to update the information.
- Display Name – displays at the end of posts, on the author’s full page, and in author bylines on posts and post cards
- Description – optional long bio field which displays on the author’s full page. If not filled out, the Short bio information will display here.
- Short bio – displays at the end of posts
- Email – displays on the author’s full page
- Twitter – displays at the end of posts and on the author’s full page
- Bluesky – displays at the end of posts and on the author’s full page
- Secure contact – displays on the author’s full page (this field expects a URL)
- User Account – links profile to user account
- Profile photo – displays at the end of posts, on the author’s full page, and in author bylines on posts and post cards
- Display Name – displays at the end of posts, on the author’s full page, and in author bylines on posts and post cards
