SendGrid: Contacts – Lists, Segments, & Unsubscribe Groups

In SendGrid, the Contacts List contains all of your Lists, Segments, and the individual users who comprise those Lists & Segments. To view and manage your Contacts List, click Marketing > Contacts.

Lists

Lists should only be added in coordination with the Lede team to ensure the corresponding newsletter is set up on the Lede platform.

  • Everyone with a verified email appears in the “All Contacts” list.
  • If a user has subscribed to a newsletter, they’ll appear on that newsletter’s list in SendGrid. A user can subscribe to a newsletter by:
    • Checking the “Yes, send me regular updates from [Publisher Name]” option when creating an account on your site
    • Submitting their email address in one of the newsletter subscribe fields on your site
    • Clicking the radio button for the newsletter on their My Account page
  • Checking the “Yes, send me regular updates from [Publisher Name]” option when creating an account on your site
  • Submitting their email address in one of the newsletter subscribe fields on your site
  • Clicking the radio button for the newsletter on their My Account page

Note regarding List Counts

  • Unsubscribed users are included in the total count of contacts in any given list; they are NOT removed from the list itself upon unsubscribing.

Segments

Segments can be added to target specific users within a list. These segments can be used both to exclude specific users from receiving single send emails/newsletters or for sending specific users an automated sequence of emails.

To create a new segment, click Create > New Segment.

Segment NameAdd a clearly labeled name for your segment.

Which Contacts: Select whether you want to segment all contacts or choose a specific, existing list from the dropdown.

Targeting: Set up your targeting criteria for the segment. You can select multiple criteria to craft the targeting as needed. In addition to the standard SendGrid fields that are available, there are several Lede-specific fields about your contacts that are also available for targeting. These Lede-specific fields, and their associated values are:

  • customer status (paying or registered)
  • donor (true or false)
  • gift purchased (true or false)
  • gift received (true or false)
  • order cancel on expiration (true or false)
  • order canceled (true or false)
  • order coupon applied (true or false)
  • order expiration (date)
  • order interval (monthly or annual)
  • product name (your product names, case sensitive to lowercase)

Unsubscribe Groups

It is important to create and add an Unsubscribe Group to your emails in order to honor your recipients’ email preferences and protect your sender reputation by complying with anti-spam legislation. To view and manage your Unsubscribe Groups, click Marketing > Unsubscribe Groups.

To create an Unsubscribe Group:

  • Click Create New Group.
  • Add a Group Name and Group Description. (Make sure your Group Names and Group Descriptions are customer-friendly. Your readers will see this!)
  • Select the checkbox if you want the Unsubscribe Group to display on the unsubscribe preferences page.
  • Click Save Unsubscribe Group.
